Description of the Workshop:

 This workshop will guide educators in designing curriculum for first-year success courses at both two-year and four-year colleges, focusing on four key areas essential for student development. Participants will learn how to create content that supports students’ personal journeys, helping them navigate the transition to higher education with confidence. The workshop will also explore strategies for enhancing academic language and skills, ensuring students are equipped for success in their coursework. Additionally, curriculum design will emphasize developing problem-solving abilities, empowering students to tackle challenges effectively. By addressing these core areas, the workshop aims to provide educators with the tools to create comprehensive, impactful curricula that foster academic success and personal growth in first-year students.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Derrick Smith brings over nine years of experience in adult education and K-12 settings, having served in various roles, including adjunct instructor, middle and high school teacher, and director of academics. Currently, Dr. Smith serves as an academic advisor, working with undergraduate students in social science disciplines. In addition, Dr. Smith teaches education leadership courses as an adjunct faculty member, drawing on his extensive knowledge of both educational practice and leadership to enrich the learning experience.
