Description of the Workshop:

Attendees will learn about innovative counseling center structures, practices, and programs designed to meet the diverse needs of Black populations, including group interventions, embedded or department liaison models, and creative outreach initiatives such as collaborative community partnerships. This workshop also explores how religion intersects mental health, examining the many ways that religious beliefs impact mental health in the Black and African American population. Attendees will explore methods for removing barriers to mental health care and open the doors for more Black and African Americans in need to receive critical services. This workshop will equip attendees with applicable knowledge to bring forward-thinking solutions to the populations they serve.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Charise Breeden-Balaam, LSW, has a distinguished career in social work and higher education administration, with experience in mental health facilities, human services agencies, and state government. A writer, educator, and public speaker, she addresses food insecurity and socio-economic issues affecting historically marginalized student populations. Dr. Charise holds a doctorate in Community College Leadership, a Master of Social Work, and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. As a first-generation African-American student, she empathizes with and seeks solutions for the unique challenges faced by this population.
