Description of the Workshop:

According to the 2022 Women in the Workplace Report, Black women leaders are more ambitious than other women leaders. However, they face significant obstacles to advancing their careers.

Purpose: The presenters will share their experiences navigating leadership roles before, during, and after pursuing doctoral degrees.

Objectives/Outcomes: The presenters will discuss: 1) how their careers and professional experiences shaped plans to pursue doctoral degrees and focus their dissertation research on diversity, equity, and inclusion topics; 2) how the dissertation research outcomes changed their perspectives on DEI in the workplace; and 3) how they use their research to improve workplaces. Faculty, industry professionals/leaders, graduate and professional students will benefit from this workshop designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced participants.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Maria Green, an HR leader at a non-profit organization, has worked in various HR roles in the healthcare, higher education, human services, and transportation sectors during her 30+ year career. Dr. Maria is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) School of Business, where she earned a doctorate in business administration (DBA). Since graduating, Dr. Green has presented her dissertation research on management strategies to address microaggressions in the workplace at national and local conferences including the 2022 BDN conference, College and University Personnel Association (CUPA-HR), and National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) People of Color Conference (POCC). Dr. Green launched Culture & Climate Matters, a consulting practice focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and improving organizational culture and climate using evidence-based solutions. Dr. Green holds the following credentials: Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Qualified Administrator, Certified Diversity Professional (CDP®️), Senior Human Resources Professional (SPHR), Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), and Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS).

Dr. Sharron Graves has been with the University of Maryland, Baltimore for over 16 years, working in the School of Medicine in the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS), where she currently serves as an administrator and member of the senior leadership team. She has spent a great deal of her time in GPILS recruiting graduate students from underrepresented groups and raising awareness of diversity challenges to promote equity and inclusivity in all facets of the graduate student experience.

Dr. Michele Wilson, CPA, PMP completed a doctoral degree in management at the University of Maryland Global Campus. Additionally, she has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from the Baruch College in New York and a Master of Business Administration in International Finance from St. John’s University, New York.
