Description of the Workshop:

There is a significant need to foster enhanced collaborative partnerships between community colleges and four-year minority-serving institutions such as HBCUs. Black social work students are often disproportionately impacted by high student loan debt and a loss of college credits while transferring to four-year universities without established articulation agreements or partnership programs. This presentation will focus on how transfer equity pipeline programs support Black social work students who are often affected by the long-term effects of high student loan debt. This workshop will also explore ways in which community colleges and four-year universities can eliminate such racial equity gaps through the utilization of community partnerships and local resources.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Christopher Robinson, advocate, educator, and licensed social worker currently serves as BSW program director and assistant professor of social work at Pennsylvania State University. Before joining Penn State, Professor Robinson previously served eleven years at the Community College of Allegheny County where he led the Associate of Science in social work degree program at South Campus. Robinson also serves as manager of cultural competency in the UPMC Center for Engagement and Inclusion where he collaborates and develops strategic diversity initiatives that focus on culturally competent patient care, eliminating health disparities, enhancing language access services, and reducing community trauma. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Professor Robinson earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from historically Black Jackson State University, a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh, and a doctorate in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is co-founder of the Western Pennsylvania Council of HBCU Alumni and the greater Pittsburgh Alumni Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Dr. Robinson is a 2020 recipient of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence in Teaching Award, the 2021 Pittsburgh Courier Men of Excellence Award, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work Distinguished Alumni Award for Social Work Education.
