The Institute of African American Research welcomes applications for its Faculty Fellowship Program for the academic year 2015-2016. The IAAR expects to make two awards for this program period. The purpose of the program is to support current research by UNC-CH faculty who are engaged in studies of African Americans and/or the broader African diaspora. Fellows’ projects should focus directly on this subject area with explicit attention to the experiences of people of African descent within the diaspora. The fellowship is open to full-time clinical, research, tenured and tenure track faculty at UNC-CH in any field or discipline. Faculty who have received IAAR funding in the past three years are ineligible to apply. Priority will also be given to applicants who are developing research projects for which they are pursuing external funding to support work related to fellowship theme.
The theme for the 2015-2016 fellowship competition is Black Communities, Well-Being and Security. Proposals must involve a study of the well-being and security of communities of black-identified people anywhere in the world. Projects should demonstrate a focus on the wellness or quality of life for black communities. They should involve an investigation of what enhances or challenges black communities’ ability to have a positive quality of life and be secure. For this competition, we understand “community” broadly, not restricted to residential areas but inclusive of some form of collectivity of black-identified people.
Applicants must complete and submit the following online:
• A Faculty Fellowship application form
• A 1000 word proposal that details the project’s: 1) subject matter and primary scholarly goals; 2) major arguments and engagement with related literatures; 3) methods; 4) significant contributions to current trends and studies of African Americans and the African diaspora especially as relevant to the competition theme; 5) progress to date and timeline for future work on the project, including expected completion date of the full project, 6) targeted external funding sources if the applicant intends to complete the writing of a research grant while holding the fellowship
• An abridged 4 page curriculum vitae that provides most recent publications as well as scholarly activities and awards.
