Description of the Workshop:

Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs, are an invaluable resource for conducting data-driven studies. APIs offer researchers an alternative data collection method when collecting their own data, accessing ready-made datasets, or web scraping is not a feasible solution. With just an API key, researchers can readily procure data from another entity without worrying about any legal ramifications. Instead, the API handles data requests between the researcher and a website (e.g., academic research journals or government databases). This should also reduce the number of errors or labor needs associated with manual data assembly.

In this workshop, we will look at the basic principles and concepts of APIs. Using an example case study, we will look at how to identify a relevant API, what you need to do to access an API and assemble a dataset for downstream analysis. We will look at how the API can be accessed from different sources (e.g., Python or R) and discuss possible usage scenarios for APIs in research.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Jessica Coates is a health data scientist with over 8 years of experience conducting data analytics in academic, industry, and government settings. She has subject matter expertise in data collection and assembly, open science initiatives, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Over the course of her career, she's been able to apply these skills to research studies in microbiology, public health, responsible and inclusive technology, and public policy. Outside of science, Dr. Coates is an avid reader and loves to travel.
