Short Description of the Workshop:
Microaggressions are brief and everyday slights, insults, indignities, and denigrating messages sent to people of color and/or marginalized groups (women, LGBTQ+, etc.) by well-intentioned [people] who are unaware of the hidden messages being communicated (Sue et al., 2007). Microaggressions are connected to broader conceptualizations of the impact of implicit bias, racism, and systems of inequity. Specifically, in higher education, microaggressions impact the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of those who are victims of them. Growing research posits the need for more open discussions in education about racism, sexism, and other bias prevalent in the field of education. This workshop builds participants' awareness about microaggressions and provides an actionable framework for addressing microaggressions.
Dr. Natasha Ramsay-Jordan is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education, University of West Georgia. Her primary research interests focus on the intersection of educational policies and urban education for diverse student learners, teacher quality and professional development; culturally and historically relevant and responsive pedagogy; issues of equity in education; STEM equity, and development grades K-12; and the role of culture in mathematics education and development.
Dr. Andrea Smith is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education, University of West Georgia. Her primary research interests focus on the intersectionality of race and class in education, teacher education, culturally responsive pedagogy, and educational equity. Her scholarship examines these issues by illuminating the voices of youth and adults who have been historically marginalized in schools and society.
